The Power of Embrace

Embrace is defined as an act of accepting or supporting something willingly or enthusiastically. Embracing each other as individuals that are part of a collective in the family unit is essential to building a strong family team. When parents and children alike feel accepted outside of their roles they are able to identify what they contribute to the family, they become invested, and feel valued. To embrace is to comfort and love which through acceptance a person feels this whether or not you comfort through a hug, kind words, or the display of love.

The Power of Empowerment

To empower is defined as an act to make (someone) stronger and more confident, especially in controlling their life and claiming their rights.  Empowerment is defined as the process of becoming stronger and more confident, especially in controlling one’s life and claiming one’s rights. People are empowered through positive feedback, learning, self awareness, teaching others and acceptance. There are many myths that have hindered families from empowering each other i.e., every woman in the African American home desires to be The Strong Black Woman,  strong willed children need to be controlled, you can control your child, empowerment of your child will create issues. There are so many that I can go on and on. Empowerment is the key to unlocking the potential within individuals and families, enabling them to overcome obstacles and thrive. It involves recognizing and embracing personal strengths, fostering resilience, and gaining a sense of control over one’s life. Empowered parents and empowered children  are more likely to foster positive communication, respect, and support.

The Power of Encouragement

To encourage is defined as the act of inspiring with courage, spirit, or hope. Encouragement is defined as the action of giving someone support, confidence, or hope and the act of trying to stimulate the development of an activity, state, or belief. As we build our community or village of support and help we connect with those that will encourage and pour into us. As parents it is important to teach our children how to encourage themselves and others. It is equally important that we encourage each other as a part of a team. Encouragement fosters strength, perseverance, and resilience by providing the confidence to keep going. As a family team we must develop ways and sometimes create moments to encourage one another.  Encouragement and the lack of encouragement will effect our emotional well-being. It is practical as a parent to accept encouragement from our children just as it is to encourage them.

The Power of Community

Community is defined as a a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals. Community plays a vital role in supporting and empowering us as individuals. Through this connection we gain a sense of belonging and find solace in shared experiences. A sense of belonging is a psychological need and without it we suffer emotionally and mentally. Whether we are the parent or the child, having a community of support is a source of empowerment. Community initiatives, such as parenting support groups, can provide a safe space for families to discuss their concerns, exchange advice, and offer emotional support hold great value. Nevertheless our very first community is our family village. We should focus on building our family team as a working concept, where as a parent we embrace our most important leadership role. Parents continue to be the most influential person/persons in the life of their child. If we as people feel accepted and as valuable members in our family unit we are not out searching for a place to belong.

Embracing, empowering, encouraging, and community are vital components in nurturing strong, resilient and harmonious teams. If as parents we learn how to consistently embrace, empower, and encourage our children as well as teach them to do the same our family team would flourish beyond measure. Emotional well-being, improved communication, effective collaboration, and strengthened relationships are the result of viewing each other as contributing individuals.

Disclosure: I am a group facilitator for parent psychoeducational groups as well as youth groups and while facilitating them both they have some common trends. Parents want to be accepted by their children as well as children by their parents, the desire for mutual respect and love are present as well as valued. All of these are human needs and both parents and children are humans at different developmental stages. Yet as humans well all have some inherent needs. Now, I didn’t go through and track stats or look at all of the studies out there however I leaned on my experiences as a parent of four, my education, certifications, and evidenced based group curriculum I use for group facilitation. Do not think that all you have to do as a family is to embrace, empower, encourage, and find community support, these are foundational concepts and practices. And all foundations if solid are meant as a platform to build on.
